The penny slot machine
Contrary to popular perception, the Penny Slot machine is a relatively new version of the traditional slot machine and introduced as a result of clever thinking by the casino fraternity.
Advancements in technology since Bally Manufacturing introduced the electro mechanical slot machine in the 1960s has led to the slot machine becoming a little more complex. That also meant that playing them became more expensive.
New versions sucked more coins from the player’s purse with multiple lines so it was costing more to win than the player realized. Computerization led to machines that accepted dollar bills, bar coded paper tickets, tokens and even credit cards.
Machines then appeared that accepted the humble nickel coin. Even then, the machines were still struggling to attract the players.
It was then decided that a slot machine would be introduced which accepted the penny, the lowest currency denomination in the USA.
In theory, the penny slot machine would attract the patronage because of the impression that it would take only a few pennies to play and win. All good in theory, but in practice, long time slot players know that the machines require a lot of pennies for a return.
One spin in a penny slot machine could cost more than dollar slot machines. It should be noted that some penny slot machines have 20 lines requiring 50 pennies per line, therefore the cost is $10 for one spin.
Penny slot machines are fun and well worth a try out though, even if just for the novelty factor.
