How Gambling Began
Gambling is as old as civilisation itself. It was often a tool used to make decisions relating to social aspects, war or other matters rather than entertainment.
Gambling was used to determine who would benefit the most from the killing of a beast, the best cuts of meat and who lost out altogether.
Legend has it that the Kings of Norway and Sweden could not decide on who would receive a piece of isolated land. They refused to compromise and come to an agreement. As a result they rolled a pair of dice to see who would get the land.
Casting lots is a term that is a euphemism for gambling. Its references can be found in the Bible with one instance mentioning how the apostles cast lots to see who would replace Judas. In Greek mythology, Zeus, Hades and Poseidon cast lost to see who would get the heavens the sea and the underworld.
