Scatter Pay

Reference to symbols that are spread across multiple lines on a slot machine. These provide a win for the player based on the pay out table.

Second Screen

Refers to a subsidiary screen available for viewing and which usually relates to a bonus win during a slots game.

Session

A period of time that a game is played for by a player. The slot machine may limit the time each player has to play a game.

Short Pay

After a win is paid the actual machine may have insufficient coins to pay the winner or there are insufficient coins in the payout hopper. In these instances a casino attendant will attend to paying.

Sizzling Slots

A slot machine that has a theoretically high payout rate.

Slant Top

Also known as a low level slot machine that includes a seat for players to sit down and play.

Slot Club

Players can join a membership club and are issued a card that keeps track of which machines have been played, the wins and losses, and payouts for these machines. They are often linked to reward schemes issued by the casino.

Slot Hold

Two numbers that determine a slot machines payout percentage.

Slot Machine

A machine that starts by placing a coin in a slot. This triggers reels to spin and slow to a stop where they display symbols. A combination of certain symbols provides a win for the player.

Slot Placement

The placement of slot machines at a casino.

Slot Schedule

A notice that is placed on the slot machine that provides information on the pay out table, denominations that can be played and the type of slot machine.

Slot Testing

An ineffective player method that uses a single roll of coins and from the ensuing spins approximates the payout percentage.

Slot Tournament

A network of slot machines which players use and which players in a tournament use.

Slots Drop

The amount of coins deposited into one machine when playing slots.

Sound of Rain

Slang term referring to the sound the coins make when paying out

Spin

To spin is to press the play button triggering the reels to rotate or spin on a slot machine.

Spooning

A device used in cheating the machine by confusing the pay out counter into paying more on a win than it should.

Static Machine

A slot machine which provides the same numerical payout.

Stops

Stops are the white space that can be seen between each symbol on the reels.

Straight Slots

A fixed sum placed on a game that guarantees a win.

Stringing

An outlawed form of cheating where players use a coin that has a string attached. The coin is dropped into the slot machine and then pulled out so in effect the player is playing for free.

Symbols

Symbols are the graphic image or picture that represent an icon such as a cherry, gold bar or other image that make up the combination on a line in order to win
